The primary role of any UPS is to provide short-term power when the input power source fails. However, most UPS units are also capable in varying degrees of correcting common utility power problems. In today's digital age, continuous electricity is essential for keeping your devices working smoothly and protecting them from unexpected power outages. Deus provides a complete selection of UPS power supply solutions designed to provide dependable power backup for both home, office or Industry.

A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is a device that supplies emergency power to your equipment when the primary power supply fails. It is intended to safeguard your devices against power outages, voltage spikes, and power surges, ensuring that your systems continue to function properly. UPS contains batteries that offer power backup, allowing you to securely turn off your devices or switch to a different power source without losing data or damaging your equipment.

The benefits of UPS systems are enormous and Investing in a UPS power supply device offers numerous advantages; Continuous Power Supply, Device protection, Data Protection, and Improved Productivity.

UPS comes in different types; Standby, line-interactive UPS, Online UPS systems convert incoming AC power to DC and back and depending on the purpose and size of the systems to support, any of these can be ideal.

Understanding The Difference Between VA and Watts

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are typically shown in sizes expressed in VA (or kVA = 1000VA).

VA is referred as to as the Apparent Power and is calculated from multiplying the Amps drawn by the load, by the voltage of the single phase supply the load is powered from (typically 230Vac, 50Hz in the UK).

Most UPS at 10kVA and below are selected based on their VA or kVA rating. We also recommened oversizing a UPS system so that it runs at or neat to 80% of its VA or kVA rating. This allows some room for expansion and also increases the runtime from the battery set from that it would be at full load.

To convert a UPS's VA rating to watts, multiply the VA rating by the power factor (PF) of the connected equipment

The power factor is a numerical ratio between 0 and 1.0 that represents how efficiently electrical power is used in an AC circuit.

For detailed information on UPS sizes and load calculations, click here  VA to Watts Calculator

The conversion formula

Watts=VA×PowerFactor

What is the Power Factor (PF)?

In AC circuits, voltage and current can become out of sync, or "out of phase," due to reactive circuit elements, which causes power to be wasted.

The power factor measures this discrepancy, indicating how much of the apparent power (VA) is actually converted into real power (watts) that does useful work.

A power factor closer to 1.0 indicates a more efficient load, meaning its wattage is closer to its VA rating.

Typical power factor values

Modern computer equipment (Power Factor Corrected): 0.9 or greater.

Legacy computer equipment: 0.6–0.75.

Resistive loads (e.g., incandescent light bulbs): Nearly 1.0.

Example calculations

Example 1: Modern equipment

For a 1000 VA UPS powering modern servers with a power factor of 0.9:

1000VA×0.9=900W

Example 2: Older equipment

For a 1000 VA UPS powering older PCs with a power factor of 0.7:

1000VA×0.7=700W

How to use this for sizing a UPS

Calculate the total wattage. Add the watt rating of every device you plan to connect to the UPS.

Determine the VA load. Divide your total wattage by the estimated power factor of your equipment.

Add a safety buffer. Choose a UPS with VA and watt ratings that are at least 20–30% higher than your calculated load. This accounts for future expansion and prevents overloading
